Easy Brownies

Cultural Context

Brownies are a classic American dessert, known for their rich chocolate flavor and fudgy texture. They are often enjoyed at parties, potlucks, and family gatherings. The origins of brownies are debated, with some attributing their creation to the late 19th century in the United States. They can be served plain or with various toppings such as nuts, frosting, or ice cream, making them a versatile treat for any occasion.

🥗Healthier: coconut oil

💰Cheaper: margarine

Coconut oil is lower in saturated fat, while margarine can be more budget-friendly.

🥗Healthier: whole wheat flour

💰Cheaper: cake flour

Whole wheat flour adds fiber and nutrients, while cake flour can be less expensive.

1

Cut or break dark chocolate into small pieces and add to a medium sized heat proof bowl.

2

Add 2 sticks (1 cup) of butter, cut into pieces, to the bowl with the chocolate.

3

Place the bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (bain-marie) without letting the water touch the bowl.

4

Leave the chocolate and butter to melt gently for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until smooth and glossy.

5

In a small bowl, measure out 1 cup of all-purpose flour, a pinch of salt, and cocoa powder, and mix to combine.

6

Once the chocolate and butter have melted, remove the bowl from heat and measure out 2 cups of white sugar, adding it to the bowl.

7

Stir the sugar into the chocolate mixture until there are no lumps.

8

In a large mixing bowl, crack in 5 medium sized free range eggs and whisk for about a minute until frothy.

9

Pour the chocolate mixture into the eggs and whisk to combine.

10

Switch to a spatula and sprinkle the dry ingredients over the batter, folding together until shiny and no lumps remain, being careful not to over mix.

11

Pour the brownie batter into a lined and greased tin.

12

Place the tin into the oven to bake for about 30-40 minutes.

13

Check if the brownies are done by testing with a toothpick; there should be crumbs sticking to it but not raw batter.

14

Remove the brownies from the oven and cool completely in the tin before slicing.
