Whole grain bread adds fiber and nutrients.
Wet hands and gently rub the outsides of the loaf of rye bread.
Place the loaf on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350°F.
Cover the hot pastrami with foil and place it in a 200°F oven to gently steam.
Grate carrots using the longer side of a cheese grater.
Add a splash of distilled white vinegar, a little bit of sugar, and quite a bit of mayonnaise to the grated carrots.
Add a couple dollops of sour cream to the coleslaw mixture.
Prepare the Russian dressing by mixing mayonnaise, pickle relish, ketchup, and buttermilk.
Check the bread after baking; it should be crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Assemble the sandwich starting with a generous layer of Russian dressing on the bottom slice of rye bread.
Layer on the hot pastrami (approximately 7 ounces), followed by two slices of Swiss cheese.
Add the coleslaw, draining it to avoid excess moisture.
Close the sandwich with the top slice of rye bread and slice it in half for serving.
