Cultural Context

Gefilte fish is a traditional Jewish dish, often served during Passover and other Jewish holidays.

8 servings
Servings4
2 containers gefilte fish (Manischewitz brand)
1/2 cup chicken broth
celery
yellow onion
carrots
kosher salt
coarse ground pepper
chopped fresh parsley
butter lettuce
beet horseradish (Silver Spring brand)
matzah
1

Open 2 containers of gefilte fish and pour the contents, including the liquid, into a pot.

2

Add 1/2 cup of chicken broth to the pot with the gefilte fish.

3

Chop and add celery, yellow onion, and carrots to the pot.

4

Turn the heat to low and cook until the onions and carrots are soft, about 30 minutes.

5

Add kosher salt and coarse ground pepper to the pot for seasoning.

6

Add chopped fresh parsley to the pot for flavor.

7

Cover the pot and check the vegetables for doneness after about 30 minutes; they should be soft with a slight crunch.

8

Once cooked, drain the gefilte fish and place it on a fancy plate or a regular one, being careful as they can fall apart easily.

9

Refrigerate the gefilte fish to help it hold together better when served cold.

10

Serve the gefilte fish on butter lettuce with a dab of beet horseradish on top.

11

Add a piece of matzah and some carrots and onions as garnish.
