Sift 3 cups of all-purpose flour into a mixing bowl.
Add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of yeast to the flour.
Stir in 1/4 cup of granulated sugar.
Warm 1/4 cup of butter and 1/4 cup of shortening for a minute and add to the mixture.
Measure and add 1 cup of warm water gradually, mixing as you go.
Attach the hook to the mixer and mix on speed 1, then shift to speed 2, and finally speed 4 for 2.5 minutes until the dough is not sticky.
Lightly flour a surface and knead the dough into a ball.
Cover the dough with a damp paper towel or cloth and let it sit for 25 minutes.
Flour the surface again and roll out the dough to slightly less than 1/4 inch thickness.
Place butter in the center of the dough, fold it over to form a half-moon shape, and press down.
Seal the edges using your fingers or a fork.
Place the formed dough into a pan, cover, and let rise for 25 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 5 minutes, then lower the heat to 275 degrees and bake until golden brown.
Melt some butter and brush it over the baked butter flaps.
