Prepare the ingredients for the Ukrainian poppy seed rolls.
Soak the poppy seeds in hot water for 30 minutes, then drain.
Grind the soaked poppy seeds in a food processor until fine.
Mix flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a large bowl.
Warm 160ml of milk and melt 90g of butter, then combine with the dry ingredients.
Add 1 beaten egg and the sachet of vanilla sugar to the mixture, and knead until smooth.
Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.
Spread the ground poppy seed mixture evenly over the dough.
Sprinkle raisins and chopped walnuts over the poppy seed layer (if using).
Roll the dough tightly into a log and seal the edges.
Place the roll in a greased baking dish and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Bake the roll for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown.
Allow to cool before drizzling with 45g of powdered sugar and 45g of honey.
