Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Mix flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
Combine yeast with warm milk and let it activate for 5-10 minutes.
Add melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
Pour in the yeast mixture and knead until smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to desired thickness.
Cut into shapes or place in a greased baking dish.
Spread fruit preserves or filling of choice over the dough.
Sprinkle with almonds and cinnamon if desired.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
Let cool before drizzling with powdered sugar icing.
Serve at room temperature or slightly warm.
