German Style Pot Roast, known as Rinderbraten, has its roots in traditional German cooking where hearty meals were essential for sustenance. This dish is often served during family gatherings and special occasions, symbolizing comfort and togetherness. Grape juice provides sweetness without alcohol.
Season the beef roast on all sides with salt and black pepper.
Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven until hot.
Sear the beef roast on both sides until beautifully browned.
In a bowl, combine tomato paste, bay leaves, chopped onion, thyme leaves, brown sugar, and German mustard.
Add 1 cup of beef broth to the mixture and stir to combine.
Transfer the seared beef to a crock pot.
Add chopped carrots to the crock pot.
Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and carrots in the crock pot.
Add German beer to the crock pot.
Set the crock pot to cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours.
At the 3-hour mark, prepare the cabbage by removing the thick stem and cutting it into thick strips.
Add the cabbage to the crock pot after 3 hours of cooking.
Cover the crock pot and continue cooking for a total of 4.5 hours.
Once done, plate the pot roast with the carrots and cabbage.
