Cranberry Sauce

Cultural Context

Cranberry sauce has its roots in Native American cuisine, where cranberries were used both as a food source and for medicinal purposes. It became a staple at Thanksgiving dinners in the United States, symbolizing the harvest and the blending of cultures. Today, it is enjoyed not only during the holidays but also as a tangy accompaniment to various dishes, with many families passing down their unique recipes.

1

Welcome to the kitchen, today we're making homemade cranberry sauce.

2

Gather ingredients: 12 ounces of cranberries, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon (optional), and 1/4 teaspoon of salt (optional).

3

In a medium pot, add 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 12 ounces of cranberries.

4

Stir the mixture and set the heat to medium on the stovetop.

5

Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally.

6

As the water heats up, the cranberries will start to pop and split open.

7

If you want a different flavor, you can use orange juice instead of water.

8

Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until it thickens, stirring occasionally.

9

When there's 1-2 minutes left, sprinkle in 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon (optional) and stir it in.

10

Check the thickness; it should be fairly thick but can be adjusted to your preference.

11

Turn off the heat and let it cool to room temperature.

12

Once cooled, transfer to a bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve.
