Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.
Cut the dough into squares or circles using a knife or cookie cutter.
Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat until shimmering.
Fry the dough pieces in batches, turning until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Remove the beignets from the oil and drain on paper towels.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
