Heat whole milk until warm, then mix in caster sugar and melted unsalted butter until combined.
Add the beaten egg and vanilla essence to the milk mixture, whisking until combined.
Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size.
Prepare the filling by grinding walnut pieces, caster sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla essence in a food processor.
Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.
Spread the walnut filling evenly over the dough, leaving edges clear.
Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other.
Place the rolled dough in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the potica for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let cool before dusting with icing sugar.
