Their origins are tied to the diverse culinary influences in Belize, from the Maya to Creole traditions. Today, they are a popular snack enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, often served at celebrations and gatherings.

Almond milk is lower in calories and can be used for a lighter dough.
Put 2 cups of flour in a bowl.
Add 1 egg to the flour.
Add 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
Add 1 teaspoon of sea salt.
Melt a little butter in the microwave for about 10-20 seconds and add it to the mixture.
Mix the ingredients with your hands, or use a fork or spoon if preferred.
Pour water into the mixture a little at a time, kneading the dough as you go.
Knead the dough until it is not too mushy.
Let the dough sit for about 10-15 minutes if you have time, otherwise you can skip this step.
Cut the dough into small pieces and roll them into little balls.
Let the dough balls sit for about 5 minutes before frying.
Heat oil in a frying pan on medium heat, enough to cover the bottom.
Flatten each dough ball in a circular motion.
Cut a small slit in the middle of each flattened dough using a knife.
Check the oil for heat by dropping a little dough in to see if it bubbles.
Fry the dough for about 2 minutes, flipping once or twice until golden brown.
