450 grams Navy beans (about 1 pound)
6 slices of bacon
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 medium diced onion
2 teaspoons mustard powder
3.5 cups beef broth
1/8 teaspoon ground clove
3 whole cloves
pepper to taste

Soak 450 grams of Navy beans overnight in water.

If not soaking overnight, boil beans in water for a few minutes, then let sit for 1-2 hours.

Strain the soaked beans, discarding any floaty bits, stones, or bad beans.

Put the beans into the slow cooker.

Add 6 slices of partly cooked bacon (chopped) and the drippings to the slow cooker.

Add 2 teaspoons of onion powder and 2 teaspoons of garlic powder.

Add 1/4 cup of packed brown sugar and 1/4 cup of molasses.

Add 1 medium diced onion and 2 teaspoons of mustard powder.

Pour in 3.5 cups of beef broth.

Add 1/8 teaspoon of ground clove and 3 whole cloves.

Add pepper to taste and 4-5 drops of Liquid Smoke.

Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours.

Check beans for softness; they should be soft and thickened after cooking.

Leave the cover off to cool and thicken before serving.
