Olive oil is a healthier fat option.
Cut the medium sweet onion in half vertically from bottom to top.
Peel the onion and trim off the root section and any peel on top.
Remove all peeled tomatoes from the can and place them on the cutting board.
Dump the remaining sauce from the can into the saucepan.
Dice the tomatoes into small pieces, keeping the liquid on the cutting board.
Add all of the tomatoes and their juice to the saucepan.
Place the saucepan on a burner over medium heat.
Place the cut side of the onion down in the tomatoes and cover it with sauce.
Add 5 tablespoons (70 gram) of unsalted butter to the saucepan.
Sprinkle a dash of salt into the saucepan.
Bring the sauce to a light simmer and cook uncovered for 1 hour, stirring periodically.
After 15 minutes, stir the sauce and smash the tomatoes into it.
After 30 minutes, check the sauce; the tomatoes should be breaking up and the onions tender.
While the sauce is cooking, bring a large pot of water to a boil for the gnocchi.
Add salt to the boiling water and drop in 1 lb (454 g) of gnocchi.
Cook the gnocchi for 3 to 4 minutes until they float to the top, then drain them.
Remove the onion from the sauce and set it aside for later use.
Taste the sauce and adjust the salt if necessary.
Add a small amount of the sauce to a pan over low heat, then add the gnocchi.
Drizzle a few more spoonfuls of the sauce on top of the gnocchi and mix.
