Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt.

Drain the juice from the fruit cocktail and measure out 1/4 cup of the juice.

Add the 1 egg, 1/4 cup juice, and the fruit cocktail into the dry ingredients.

Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and mix everything together gently without using a mixer.

Grease a 9-inch square pan with butter and spread the batter evenly in the pan.

Sprinkle 1/2 cup of brown sugar evenly on top of the batter.

Add 1/2 cup of walnuts, breaking them up and sprinkling them on top.

Bake in the oven for 30 minutes, checking for doneness starting at 25 minutes.

Remove the cake from the oven after about 45 minutes and let it cool before cutting.
