  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. 2Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet and brush both sides with olive oil.
  3. 3Toast the baguette slices in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  4. 4In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.
  5. 5Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.

  7. 7Add the broth and thyme, and continue to cook for another 10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  8. 8Top each toasted baguette slice with a spoonful of the onion mixture.
  9. 9Sprinkle grated Gruyère cheese on top of each crostini.
  10. 10Return to the oven and broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
