Peel and slice 3 medium onions.

In a cast-iron skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions to the skillet and spread them into a single layer.

Cook the onions until they're caramelized, about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.

Lower the heat to medium low and add 1 large clove of minced garlic, stirring to sauté for about a minute.

Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to the onion mixture and stir, cooking for an additional 2 minutes.

Remove the mixture from heat and let it cool to room temperature, or cool quickly by transferring to a plate and placing it in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes.

In a separate bowl, mix together softened cream cheese, sour cream, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce.

Chop the cooled caramelized onions into very fine pieces and reserve a small amount for topping, if desired.

Fold the chopped onions into the cream cheese mixture and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Prepare a platter with a variety of vegetables: broccoli, celery, carrots, and red pepper, along with kettle chips.
