1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 tsp salt
1 package active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 cup mixed dried fruit (raisins, currants, etc.)
1/2 cup chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc.)
1/4 cup rum or brandy
1 egg

In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (not boiling). Remove from heat and stir in the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and rum to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Once risen, punch down the dough and knead in the dried fruit and nuts until evenly distributed.

Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the stollen for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
