Preheat the oven to 425°F.

In a pan with high sides over medium heat, add a few tablespoons of olive oil.

Add chopped garlic and onion to the pan and cook until translucent.

Add a splash of white wine to the pan and let it reduce for about a minute.

Add crushed tomatoes to the pan and season with salt and pepper.

Let the sauce cook for about 20 minutes.

Fill a pot with water, add a generous sprinkling of salt, and bring to a boil for the gnocchi.

Once the water is boiling, add the gnocchi and cook for about 2 minutes or until they float to the top.

Drain the gnocchi and return them to the pot.

Add the sauce to the gnocchi and mix well to prevent sticking.

Transfer the gnocchi and sauce mixture to a casserole dish.

Dollop whole milk ricotta over the top of the gnocchi mixture.

Place slices of mozzarella on top of the ricotta.

Bake in the preheated oven at 425°F for about 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Let the dish cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
