Originating in Austria and perfected in France, the croissant is a symbol of French pastry culture. Traditionally enjoyed at breakfast, it embodies the art of lamination, where layers of dough and butter create its flaky texture. Today, croissants are enjoyed worldwide, with variations like chocolate or almond croissants becoming popular.
unsalted butter

Whole wheat flour adds fiber, while bread flour can improve texture.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Mix it well.
Add the warm milk and stir until it forms a dough.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it's smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Prepare the butter block by placing cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper and flattening it into a rectangle about half an inch thick with a rolling pin.
Pop the butter block in the fridge to keep it cold.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle about half an inch thick.
Place the cold butter block in the center of the dough, fold the sides over, and seal the edges.
Roll it out again into a long rectangle and fold it into thirds like a letter. Repeat this rolling and folding process two more times.
After the final fold, roll the dough out one last time into a large rectangle and cut it into triangles.
Place the croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover them with a cloth, and let them rise for about 30 to 45 minutes until they puff up.
Preheat the oven to 400° F (200° C).
While the croissants rise, whisk the egg and brush it on top for a golden finish.
Bake the croissants in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they're golden brown and flaky.
Let the croissants cool for a few minutes before enjoying them warm.
