Pupusas

Cultural Context

Pupusas are a traditional dish from El Salvador, often enjoyed as street food or at family gatherings. Made from masa and filled with various ingredients, they symbolize the country's rich culinary heritage. Today, pupusas have gained popularity beyond Central America, with many variations emerging globally.

SVSVmain
6 servings
Servings4
2 cups masa harina
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup cheese (shredded)
1 cup refried beans
1 lb pork (cooked and shredded)
2 cups cabbage (shredded)
1 cup carrots (shredded)
1/4 cup vinegar
1 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 jalapeños (sliced)
1/2 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons oil

Quantities are estimated based on standard recipes for your convenience. The actual ingredients used in this video are accurate.

1

Prepare the Masa by placing it in a bowl and massaging it together until it's clumped.

2

Wet your fingertips with water to help shape the Masa.

3

Shape the Masa into a flat disc, ensuring it's not too thick or thin.

4

If you see cracks in the Masa, it means it needs more moisture; if it sticks to your hands, it has too much moisture.

5

Take a small ball of filling (cheese) and press it into the center of the Masa disc.

6

Carefully fold the edges of the Masa over the filling, ensuring all seams touch to seal it like a dumpling.

7

Pat the filled Masa out gently to flatten it further.

8

Preheat your griddle and place the pupusa on it.

9

Cook the pupusa for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side until it has a good color and is cooked through.
