Chill a martini glass by adding fresh ice and one shot of water, swish it around, and let it sit.

Fill a Boston shaker with ice to about 1/2 to 3/4 full.

For a gin martini, pour in 2 and 1/2 oz (five parts) of gin.

Add 1/2 oz (one part) of dry vermouth to the shaker.

Dump out the ice water from the chilled martini glass.
