Traditionally filled with savory mince or enjoyed with jam, it reflects the country's diverse culinary influences. Today, Vetkoek is enjoyed at gatherings and celebrations, showcasing its versatility as both a snack and a meal.

Add 4 cups of flour, 1 packet of instant yeast, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar into a mixing bowl.
Make a hole in the middle of the dry ingredients and add 1 tablespoon of oil.
Gradually add around 1/2 cup of lukewarm water as required, mixing until the dough is soft and not too doughy.
Brush oil on top of the dough and cover it with plastic wrap or cling film.
Let the dough rise in a warm place for 30 to 45 minutes.
After the dough has risen, deflate it and knead for 2 minutes to remove air.
Break the dough into pieces and roll them into balls.
Flatten each ball into a thin round circle, using oil on your palms or fingers to make it easier.
Cover the flattened dough with cling wrap and let it rise for 5 minutes.
Preheat the oil for frying.
Once the oil is heated, add the dough into the oil and fry, spooning oil over the top to help it puff up.
Fry until golden brown on one side, then flip and fry the other side until golden.
Remove the fried vetkoek from the oil and place it in a strainer or on kitchen roll paper to remove excess oil.
