Add 1/2 cup of warm water to a measuring cup.
Stir in 1 teaspoon of white sugar and 1/4 ounce of active dry yeast until dissolved.
Let the mixture stand until foamy, about 10 minutes.
Heat 1/2 cup of milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it just starts to bubble around the edges, then remove from heat.
Add 1/4 cup of white sugar, 1/4 cup of butter, and 1 teaspoon of salt to the milk, stirring until the butter is melted and let it cool until lukewarm.
Lightly beat 2 eggs in a large bowl.
Add the yeast mixture, milk mixture, and 1 1/2 cups of flour to the eggs and stir until well combined.
Gradually add 2 1/2 cups of flour, half a cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough pulls together.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Oil a large bowl, place the dough in it, and turn to coat with oil.
Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and set aside.
Melt 3/4 cup of butter in a small saucepan and whisk in 3/4 cup of brown sugar until smooth.
Pour the mixture into the greased baking pan and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of chopped pecans.

In a small bowl, combine 3/4 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of pecans, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, stirring together and setting aside.
Turn the raised dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll it into an 18x14 inch rectangle.
Brush the dough with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, leaving a border uncovered.
Sprinkle the brown sugar cinnamon mixture evenly over the dough.
Starting at the long side, tightly roll up the dough, pinching the seam to seal.
Brush the roll with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
Cut off the end of the roll to make a clean starting point, then cut the roll into 15 pieces.
Arrange the pieces cut-side down in the prepared baking pan and cover to let rise for another hour until doubled in volume.
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Bake the cinnamon buns for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Let the buns cool in the pan for a few minutes, then invert onto a serving platter.
Scrape the remaining filling from the pan onto the rolls.
