This simple bread became a staple in Irish households, often associated with traditional meals and celebrations. Today, variations exist worldwide, incorporating different flours, seeds, and fruits, while still honoring its humble roots.

Coconut oil offers a dairy-free option.
Add 3 cups flour to a bowl.
Add 1-1/8 tsp of baking soda to the flour.
Add 1-1/4 tsp of salt to the mixture.
Sift the ingredients into the bowl.
Whisk thoroughly for even rising.
Add 2-1/4 cups low-fat buttermilk to the bowl.
Stir until fully moistened and create a rough ball of dough.
Pour the dough into a prepared Dutch oven.
Shape the dough with a spatula.
Dip a knife in flour and cut a traditional 'X' on top of the dough, may require a few cuts.
Bake at 450°F for 45 minutes.
After 45 minutes, remove the lid and bake until the bread is chestnut brown.
Remove from the oven when chestnut brown and cool for 30 minutes.
