Today, variations exist worldwide, incorporating different flours, seeds, and fruits, while still honoring its humble roots.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
In a large bowl, combine 350 grams of plain white flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
Mix the dry ingredients together with your finger.
In a separate bowl, mix 285 ml of buttermilk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and pour it into the flour mixture.
Using a spatula, mix everything together until it forms a rough, shaggy dough.
If the dough looks too wet, add a little more flour as a light dusting.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and form it into a rough ball, keeping it a little sticky.
Place the dough onto a baking tray and cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes.
After baking, tap the bottom of the loaf to check for a hollow sound, indicating it's done.
Let the bread cool on a wire rack for about 30 minutes before slicing.
