Measure out dry ingredients: plain flour, salt, caster sugar, and bicarbonate of soda.
Mix the dry ingredients together.
Pour in 450 ml of buttermilk, reserving a bit in case the dough is stiff.
Combine the buttermilk with the dry ingredients.
If the dough is stiff, add the reserved buttermilk.
Gently knead the mixture for about 30 seconds until combined.
Dust a baking tray with flour and place the dough in the center.
Score a deep cross into the dough with a knife.
Bake in a preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
