These sweet, twisted dough shapes symbolize the martyrs and are typically enjoyed with honey and walnuts. The dish reflects the deep-rooted customs of Moldovan culture, where food plays a central role in celebrations. 1

Heat 900 ml of milk until warm.

2

In the warm milk, add 3 spoons of sugar, 4 spoons of flour, and 120 g of fresh yeast.

3

Melt 160 g of butter and let it cool slightly before adding it to the mixture.

4

Mix everything and let it sit in a warm place for 10-15 minutes.

5

Prepare the syrup by combining 500 ml of water and 500 g of sugar in a saucepan.

6

Heat the syrup until the sugar is completely melted and the mixture becomes viscous, about 5-7 minutes.

7

Add 20 g of vanilla sugar, 50 ml of rum essence, 2-3 pinches of salt, and 3 eggs (one for each composition) to the risen mixture.

8

Add 1.5 kg of flour and mix well until combined.

9

Cover the mixture and let it rise in a warm place for 30-40 minutes.

10

Divide the dough into balls of desired size and shape them into the classic figure-eight shape.

11

Place the shaped dough on a baking tray and cover them, letting them rise for about 10 minutes.

12

Prepare an egg wash with 1 egg yolk and a little milk, then brush it over the dough.

13

Bake in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 10-15 minutes, checking for a golden color.

14

Once baked, dip the martyrs in the syrup and roll them in crushed walnuts.
