Today, variations abound, including vegan and healthier versions, but the classic remains beloved in homes across the country.

Mix together 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup cornstarch, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large saucepan.
Slowly add 2 cups of whole milk to the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth.
Cook and stir the mixture over medium heat until it thickens and bubbles, which takes a few minutes.
Temper the eggs by pouring a little bit of the hot mixture into 3 egg yolks to gradually raise their temperature.
Whisk the tempered egg yolks with the hot pudding mixture and return it to the pan.
Cook the mixture for another 2 minutes before adding the chocolate.
Sprinkle in the giant dark chocolate bar and melt it into the mixture.
Remove the pan from heat and add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla for flavor.
Transfer the pudding into a bowl and press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming.
Refrigerate the pudding to cool and thicken further.
To make chocolate curls, warm the edge of a milk chocolate candy bar and use a Y peeler to create curls.
After chilling, remove the plastic wrap and serve the pudding topped with homemade whipped cream and optional garnishes like chocolate curls, toasted nuts, or chopped M&M's.
