Surf and Turf
Cultural Context
Surf and Turf is a popular dish that combines seafood and meat, often enjoyed in British cuisine as a luxurious meal option.
Start by boiling 6 cups of water.
Cut 12 potatoes in half for faster cooking.
Boil the potatoes for about 15 minutes, leaving the cover halfway on to prevent boiling over.
Transfer the cooked potatoes to a dish to drain the water.
Mash the potatoes until finely done using a masher.
Add 3 tablespoons of butter to the mashed potatoes and mix.
Pour in 1/3 cup of heavy cream and mix for creaminess.
Add 1 teaspoon of garlic salt, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and a pinch of black pepper to the potatoes and mix everything together for 30 to 45 seconds.
Keep the mashed potatoes warm on low heat on the stove.
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet for the steak.
Season the steak with 1 tablespoon of garlic salt, 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, and 1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning before searing.
Sear the steak for 10 minutes on one side, then flip it over and season the other side with garlic salt.
Sear the other side for another 10 minutes, adjusting time based on desired doneness.
After the first 20 minutes, flip the steak every 5 minutes for an additional 10 minutes total.
Turn off the stove after the final flip of the steak.
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a separate pan for the shrimp.
Add 12 jumbo shrimp to the pan.
Season the shrimp with 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning and mix.
Cook the shrimp for 4 to 5 minutes, flipping them halfway through.
After 10 minutes total, remove the shrimp from heat.
Prepare 1 cup of green beans by cutting them in half.
Saute the green beans in olive oil with a pinch of garlic salt, garlic powder, and black pepper on medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes.
Plate the steak, shrimp, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans.
