Baguettes

Cultural Context

Baguettes are a staple of French cuisine, originating in the 19th century as a convenient bread for workers. Their long, crusty exterior and soft interior make them perfect for sandwiches or served alongside meals. Today, baguettes are enjoyed worldwide, often seen as a symbol of French culture and craftsmanship.

1

Add 1 cup of warm water to the bread machine.

2

Add 2 and 3/4 cups of bread flour to the machine.

3

Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the mixture.

4

Add 1 teaspoon of kosher salt.

5

Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of bread machine yeast.

6

Set the bread machine to the dough cycle (setting number seven) for 1 and a half hours.

7

After the dough cycle is complete, flour a surface and place the dough on it to rest for about 10 minutes.

8

Cover the dough with a light tea towel to prevent it from drying out.

9

Divide the dough into half to make two loaves.

10

Roll each piece of dough into a rectangle shape using a rolling pin.

11

Tightly roll the dough from the long side and pinch the ends to shape it.

12

Make three slashes on top of each shaped loaf with a sharp knife.

13

Place the loaves on parchment paper and cover them with a towel for the second rise (30 to 40 minutes).

14

Prepare an egg wash by mixing 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water.

15

Brush the egg wash over the surface of the loaves, ensuring to cover the sides and ends.

16

Sprinkle everything but the bagel seasoning on top of the loaves.

17

Bake the loaves until they have a hollow sound when tapped, indicating they are done.
