Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions, but reduce cooking time by 3 minutes.
Prepare an 11x17 aluminum baking pan for layering.
Set the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare to cook the lasagna for 30 minutes covered, then 30 minutes uncovered.
In a skillet, combine ground beef and sweet Italian sausage, cooking until browned and uniform in texture.
Add salt, black pepper, granulated garlic, and oregano to the meat mixture.
If using, add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened.
Add about 3 cups of water to the skillet with the meat and sauce to thin it out, then add sugar to balance the acidity.
Cover the skillet and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes to break down any large chunks of meat.
In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese and beaten eggs until smooth.
Layer the lasagna by starting with a layer of meat sauce, followed by a layer of noodles, then a layer of ricotta mixture, and a layer of mozzarella cheese. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of meat sauce and cheese on top.
Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
