Japanese Breakfast

Cultural Context

A traditional Japanese breakfast typically includes rice, miso soup, grilled fish, and various side dishes. It reflects the Japanese emphasis on balance and nutrition, often featuring seasonal ingredients. This meal is commonly enjoyed at home and in ryokans (traditional inns), providing a hearty start to the day.

3 eggs
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp water
vegetable oil (as needed for cooking)

white rice

🥗Healthier: brown rice

💰Cheaper: short-grain rice

Brown rice is more nutritious, while short-grain rice is often less expensive.

grilled fish

🥗Healthier: baked fish

💰Cheaper: canned fish

Baked fish is lower in fat, and canned fish is budget-friendly.

miso

🥗Healthier: low-sodium miso

💰Cheaper: soy sauce

Low-sodium miso is healthier, while soy sauce can be a cheaper alternative.

1

In a bowl, beat the eggs. Add the sugar, soy sauce, and water. Mix well until fully combined.

2

Lightly oil the pan and heat over medium heat. Tilt the pan to evenly coat the surface with oil.

3

Pour about one-third of the egg mixture into the pan. Spread it evenly. When the egg is mostly set but still slightly soft on top, gently roll it from the far edge toward you. Slide the rolled egg back to the far edge of the pan.

4

Add a little more oil if needed. Pour half of the remaining egg mixture into the pan, lifting the rolled egg slightly so the mixture flows underneath. Once almost set, roll again and move the omelet back to the far edge.

5

Pour the rest of the egg mixture into the pan and repeat the same process.

6

Remove from the pan and let cool slightly. Slice into even pieces and serve. Enjoy!
