Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place the empty pie crust on a baking sheet.
Pour 1.5 cups of water into the pie crust.
In a small bowl, stir together 1/2 cup of flour and 1 cup of sugar.
Sprinkle the flour and sugar mixture evenly over the water in the crust without stirring.
Drizzle 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract over the mixture.
Cut 5 tablespoons of butter into pieces and lay them on top of the mixture in the pie crust.
Bake in the preheated oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.
Reduce the heat to 375 degrees and cover the edges of the crust if needed to prevent burning.
Continue baking for an additional 30 minutes.
Remove the pie from the oven; it will be watery when pulled out but will gel as it cools.
Allow the pie to cool completely, then cover and place in the fridge until chilled before cutting.
