Nigerian roasted plantain, known as Boli, is a popular street food enjoyed across Nigeria. Traditionally cooked over an open flame, it embodies the vibrant flavors of Nigerian cuisine. This dish is often served with spicy pepper sauce or eaten as a snack, making it a versatile addition to any meal. Today, Boli is celebrated not just in Nigeria but also in various parts of West Africa, where it has gained international recognition for its unique taste and simplicity.

ripe plantains

💰Cheaper: bananas
Sweet potatoes provide a similar texture and flavor.
vegetable oil

💰Cheaper: canola oil
Coconut oil adds a unique flavor while being healthier.
Wash the ripe plantain and ensure it is firm.
Give the plantain a slit on the side and peel off the skin.
Make slits on all sides of the plantain to help spices penetrate.
Place the plantain on a piece of foil paper.
Brush vegetable oil generously over the plantain on both sides.
Sprinkle salt to taste on both sides of the plantain.
Add soya spice on both sides (optional).
Wrap the plantain in foil paper.
Place the wrapped plantain in a non-stick pan on low heat.
Turn the plantain at intervals to ensure all sides are well roasted.
To check if the plantain is done, open the foil paper and look for browning.
In a separate pan, add palm oil and roughly blended habanero and onion.
Add salt to taste and stir, then heat on low for a few minutes.
Set the sauce aside after cooking.
