- 1In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
- 2Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth.
- 3Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble.
- 4Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully melted and combined.
- 5Pour the pudding into individual serving dishes or a large bowl.
- 6Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming.
- 7Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until set.
- 8Serve chilled, optionally topped with whipped cream or chocolate shavings.
