Korean Birthday Seaweed Soup

Cultural Context

Korean Birthday Seaweed Soup, or Miyeok-guk, is traditionally consumed on birthdays in Korea, symbolizing health and well-being. The dish is made with seaweed, which is believed to provide nourishment and is often enjoyed by new mothers as well. Today, it is cherished both for its cultural significance and its comforting flavors, enjoyed by many beyond just birthdays.

4 servings
Servings4
25 g Dried Seaweed (Miyeok)
10 oz Beef Brisket
1 tbsp Sesame Oil
3 tbsp Soup Soy Sauce
6 cups Water
1 tbsp Garlic, minced
⅓ tbsp Salt
1 tbsp Anchovy Sauce
1

Soak the dried seaweed in cold water until it becomes fully soft. Once rehydrated, squeeze out the excess water and cut into bite-sized pieces.

2

Cut the beef brisket into bite-sized pieces. Then in a pot, add sesame oil, the beef brisket slices and 1 spoon of soup soy sauce. Sauté over medium-low heat until the beef is slightly cooked. Once the beef loses its pink color on the outside, add the seaweed slices and another spoon of soy sauce for soup, and continue to sauté.

3

Add 2 cups of water and mix well, then cover with a lid and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

4

Add 2 more cups of water, minced garlic, and anchovy sauce. Let it simmer for another 30 minutes. Season with salt if needed.

5

Set the table with rice, kimchi, and a variety of Korean side dishes. Your traditional Korean birthday meal is ready!
