Mix three boxes of white cake mix following the directions on the box.
Pour about half the batter into one bowl and add red food coloring.
Divide the rest of the batter into two bowls; add blue food coloring to one and stir in 1 cup of white chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into pans and bake at 350° for about 30 minutes.
Once the cakes have cooled, trim the tops and slice the red and white layers in half, creating two thinner layers.
Cut a 4-inch round out of one of the white layers, one of the red layers, and out of the blue layer.
Assemble the cake starting with a red layer, add frosting, then a white layer, frost again, and repeat with the remaining layers.
Top with the ring of blue cake, frost inside the ring, add the small white cake layer, frost again, and finish with the red layer.
Frost the top and sides of the cake, score stripes with a knife to create a flag pattern, sprinkle crumbled leftover cake pieces for decoration, and place white chocolate chips on the blue for stars.
