Start by introducing the dish, hamburger casserole.
Prepare the ingredients: 85% ground beef, 1 medium diced onion, and 5-6 medium potatoes cut into flat pieces.
If cutting potatoes by hand, ensure they are no larger than a quarter inch thick.
In a bowl, break up the ground beef with a fork and add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Mix well.
Layer the cut potatoes across the bottom of a 9x9 casserole dish, ensuring they are mostly uniform in size.
Spread the diced onions randomly over the layer of potatoes.
Add a layer of the seasoned ground beef over the onions, breaking it up to even it out.
Ladle a bit of the mixed tomato sauce and tomato soup over the beef layer to help it penetrate to the bottom layers.
Repeat the layering process with another layer of potatoes, onions, and ground beef, ensuring not to overfill the dish to prevent overflow during cooking.
Preheat the oven to 350°F and place the casserole in the oven to bake for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
