Variations abound, with some adding vegetables or different cheeses, making it a beloved dish across the country.

Reduced-fat cheese lowers calories without sacrificing flavor.
Heat a skillet on medium heat and add 1 lb of ground beef.
Use a meat breaker to break up the beef until finely crumbled and cook until no longer pink.
Drain the fat from the cooked ground beef.
Add 2 15oz cans of tomato sauce to the beef and stir well.
Mix in 1 teaspoon of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt into the beef mixture.
Let the beef mixture simmer on medium-low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
In a separate pot, bring water to a boil and add 8 oz of egg noodles, optionally adding salt.
Boil the egg noodles with the lid on for about 7 to 9 minutes, then drain the water.
In a bowl, combine 1 cup of sour cream and 3 oz of softened cream cheese, then mix well.
Dice 1 large onion and add it to the sour cream and cream cheese mixture, then mix again.
After 20 minutes, turn off the heat on the beef mixture and remove it from the burner.
Grease a 13x9x2 inch baking dish with olive oil.
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Layer half of the egg noodles in the bottom of the greased baking dish.
Spread half of the sour cream, cream cheese, and onion mixture over the noodles.
Add half of the meat mixture on top of the sour cream layer.
Repeat the layering process with the remaining ingredients.
Top the final layer with 1/2 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
Let the casserole cool before serving.
