In a mixing bowl, add 1 tbsp of granulated sugar and one packet of instant yeast.
Add 2 cups of lukewarm water to the mixture and stir.
Slowly add flour, about 3.5 cups in total, while kneading the dough.
Add 1 tsp of salt to the dough and continue kneading until it's slightly smooth and soft, but a little sticky.
Cover the dough with a thick kitchen towel and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
After rising, transfer the dough to a floured countertop and sprinkle flour on the counter.
Use a dough scraper to divide the dough into pieces by eye, shaping them with fingertips.
Dust the shaped dough balls with flour and flatten them slightly by eye.
Heat enough cooking oil in a suitable pan over medium-high heat.
Carefully place the prepared dough balls into the hot oil and fry them, flipping when they start puffing up.
Spoon hot oil over the dough balls before flipping if desired, and fry until lightly golden.
