In a large bowl, combine 1/2 cup white granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons cornstarch, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Whisk the dry ingredients together until mixed well.
Add 2 cups of milk to the dry mixture and stir to combine.
Transfer the mixture to the stovetop and set the burner to medium heat (about 350 degrees Fahrenheit).
Heat the milk until little bubbles form around the edges, stirring periodically for about 5 to 10 minutes.
Once bubbles appear, gradually add the dry mixture to the milk, stirring continuously to dissolve the dry ingredients.
Stir until the mixture thickens enough to coat the bottom of a metal spoon, ensuring it does not boil.
Remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
Pour the pudding into serving dishes immediately.
To prevent a skin from forming, cover the pudding with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface.
Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour before serving, or serve warm if preferred.
