Made from masa and filled with various ingredients, they symbolize the country's rich culinary heritage. Today, pupusas have gained popularity beyond Central America, with many variations emerging globally.

Servings4
2 cups masa harina
1 cup water
1 cup refried beans
1/2 cup onion, diced
1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced
1 medium tomato, diced
1 cup queso fresco, crumbled
1 cup cabbage, shredded
1/2 cup carrots, shredded
1 teaspoon Mexican oregano
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon salt

Quantities are estimated based on standard recipes for your convenience. The actual ingredients used in this video are accurate.

1

Sanitize your workspace before starting.

2

Pour masa harina into a bowl, adjusting the amount based on how many pupusas you're making.

3

Add water to the masa harina and mix until it becomes soft and doughy, adding more water as needed.

4

Let the masa sit for a bit while preparing the beans.

5

Dice the onion and blend it with refried beans in a blender.

6

Pour the blended beans and onions back into a pan and cook on medium to low heat.

7

Dice green bell pepper and tomato for the filling.

8

Prepare the cheese by adding a little water to queso fresco and mixing it until it's firm.

9

Take a chunk of masa and flatten it into a circular shape, making sure it's not too thin.

10

Add the filling (beans, cheese, and chicharrón) into the flattened masa and fold it over to seal.

11

Shape the pupusa with wet hands if necessary, then place it in a pan.

12

Cook the pupusas for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.

13

Slice carrots and cabbage for the side sauce.

14

In a bowl, combine the diced cabbage and carrots, add a pinch of oregano, a little apple cider vinegar, and a pinch of salt.
