Cultural Context

Frikadeller, or Danish meatballs, have roots in traditional Danish cuisine, often enjoyed during family gatherings and festive occasions. These savory meatballs symbolize comfort and home-cooked meals in Denmark. While they are typically made with a mix of pork and beef, variations exist globally, with different spices and serving styles.

1

Combine 0.5 pound ground beef and 0.5 pound ground pork in a bowl.

2

Add 0.25 cup bread crumbs, 0.33 cup grated onion, 2 tablespoons milk, 1 egg, 0.5 teaspoon salt, 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg, and 0.25 teaspoon black pepper to the meat mixture.

3

Use hands to mix the ingredients until combined, or use a wooden spoon if preferred.

4

Form a well in the middle of the mixture and add 2 tablespoons of seltzer water, then mix again.

5

Shape the mixture into meatballs and place them on a baking tray, slightly flattening them.

6

Heat a heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter, allowing it to melt.

7

Once the butter is melted and bubbling, add the meatballs to the pan and cook until browned on one side before flipping.

8

Cover the pan with a lid while cooking to retain heat, and remove meatballs to a plate once cooked through.

9

In the same pan, add another tablespoon of butter and melt it over medium-low heat to make the sauce.

10

Add 2 tablespoons of flour to the melted butter and mix until a paste forms.

11

Pour in 1 cup of cream and mix until the flour dissolves into the cream.

12

Add 1 teaspoon of jarred beef bouillon and mix well.

13

Allow the sauce to thicken slightly over medium-low heat before adding 5-6 sage leaves.

14

Once the sauce is thickened, return the meatballs to the pan and stir to coat them in the sauce.

15

Cover the pan and heat for 2-3 minutes to warm the meatballs before serving.
