Cultural Context
Originating from the Cape Malay community in South Africa, Mosbolletjies are sweet, spiced bread rolls traditionally enjoyed during festive occasions. The use of anise seeds gives them a distinctive flavor, often associated with celebrations and gatherings. Today, they are cherished by many South Africans and have found their way into homes and bakeries around the world, often served with tea or coffee.

Mix yeast with warm water and sugar in a bowl until frothy, about 5 minutes.
Combine bread flour, anise seeds, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and milk to the dry ingredients.
Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 10 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch down the dough and shape it into small round balls.
Place the balls on a greased baking tray, leaving space between them.
Cover the tray with a cloth and let the balls rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Bake the Mosbolletjies for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter before serving.
