Grease and flour two round cake pans.
Mix butter and sugar in a bowl until creamy.
Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Stir in vanilla extract and milk until combined.
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Prepare the frosting by mixing cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.
Spread frosting between the layers and over the top of the cake.
Decorate with fruit preserves, coconut flakes, and chocolate ganache as desired.
