These delightful fried bread slices are reminiscent of French toast, enriched with spices and served with honey. In Honduras, they symbolize comfort and celebration, making them a staple at family gatherings. Today, variations can be found across Latin America, each with its unique twist, yet they remain a cherished part of Honduran heritage.

Separate the 7 large eggs into whites and yolks.
Beat the egg whites until they double in volume, about 15 minutes.
In a pot, combine 1/2 cup water and 2 cups papelón, breaking it into pieces.
Add cinnamon sticks and 4 cloves to the pot and bring to a boil to make the syrup.
Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer until it thickens into a syrup.
Prepare a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil from the fried torrejas.
Preheat oil in a skillet, ensuring it is not too hot to avoid burning the torrejas.
Dip the prepared bread into the egg yolk mixture, then coat with the beaten egg whites.
Fry the coated bread in the hot oil until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Remove the fried torrejas and place them on the paper towel to drain excess oil.
Drizzle the syrup over the fried torrejas before serving.
