Cultural Context
Taiyaki originated in Japan in the early 20th century, inspired by the shape of the tai fish, symbolizing good fortune. Traditionally filled with sweet red bean paste, it is a popular street food enjoyed during festivals and fairs. Today, taiyaki has evolved with various fillings like custard, chocolate, and even savory options, making it a beloved treat both in Japan and around the world.

Mix flour, sugar, and baking powder in a bowl.
In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until smooth.
Preheat a taiyaki mold over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil.
Pour a small amount of batter into the mold, covering the bottom.
Add a spoonful of red bean paste or desired filling on top of the batter.
Cover the filling with more batter until the mold is full.
Close the mold and cook for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
Flip the mold and cook for another 3-4 minutes on the other side.
Remove the taiyaki from the mold and let cool slightly before serving.
