1

In a large bowl, place warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let this mixture stand for about 10 minutes to proof the yeast.

2

Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture and mix together to form a soft dough.

3

Start mixing with a spoon until it comes together, then use your hands to knead the dough.

4

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 to 15 minutes until smooth.

5

Form the dough into a ball and place it into a lightly greased bowl. Cover lightly and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

6

Punch down the dough and turn it onto an unfloured surface. If necessary, use flour sparingly to prevent stickiness.

7

Separate the dough into three equal pieces and roll each piece to about 14 inches in length.

8

Line the three strands up next to each other and braid them together using the standard braiding method, starting in the middle and working to the ends.

9

Press each end together and tuck it under. Flip the loaf over and repeat the braiding process.

10

Place the braided loaf onto a baking sheet and allow it to rise for another 30 minutes.

11

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

12

After 30 minutes, place the loaf in the preheated oven on the middle rack and bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.

13

Once out of the oven, brush the loaf liberally with melted butter and allow it to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing.
