Cultural Context
Hawawshi hails from Egypt, where it is a popular street food, often enjoyed as a quick meal. Traditionally made with spiced ground meat stuffed in pita bread, it reflects the rich flavors of Egyptian cuisine. Today, variations can be found across the Middle East, showcasing local spices and ingredients.
Add fresh parsley, 1 roughly chopped yellow onion, 1 roughly chopped green bell pepper, 1 jalapeño, and 2 garlic cloves to a food processor.
Strain the excess water from the vegetable mixture.
Add the strained vegetable mixture to the ground beef.
Mix the beef and vegetables together.
Season the mixture with 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon ground coriander, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, sea salt, and black pepper.
Slice the thicker style pita bread in half to create a pocket.
Fill the pita pocket with the beef mixture, packing it tightly.
Set the hawawshi on a baking tray.
Brush olive oil on top of the pita.
Bake in the oven at 400°F for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
