Mix all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl until combined.
Add softened butter to the flour mixture and mix until no large clumps remain.
Combine warmed milk and water, then add sugar and stir until dissolved.
Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and gradually add the liquid, mixing little by little.
Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth.
Form the dough into a ball and cover it with cling wrap or a lid to let it rise for 30 minutes.
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and cut it into 10 pieces.
Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into a circle, pressing the ends flat.
Heat oil in a pot to about 2 to 3 inches deep over medium-high heat.
Drop the bake into the hot oil and gently baste the top with hot oil as it cooks.
Fry until golden brown on both sides, then remove and drain on paper towels.
